Alpaca Information
Alpaca are one of the 4 South American Camelids.
The others are the Llama, Vicuna & Guanaco.
The Llama [pronounced yama], is about twice the size of an alpaca and used in South America as a pack animal and for its fleece. The Vicuña [vi-coon-ya] and the Guanaco [gwan-a-co or Hu-an-a-co] also have beautiful fleece but are difficult to domesticate.
There are 2 types of alpaca.
Huacaya Alpacas
One with crimped fleece like a merino sheep - these are called Huacaya [pronounced Wa-kai-ya]. Around 90-95% of the world's herd of alpaca are Huacaya.
Suri Alpacas have long gently curled locks, with fleece that feels and looks like silk.
The Suri fleece develops long, gently curled locks, that has exceptional lustre. At Surilox Pakapad we specialise in Suris.
Suris number less than 10% of the world's alpaca. The fleece is used mostly for fine designer clothing. Suri fleece can also be handspun into wonderful fine yarn and used for lace, which is as fine as pashmina.
Our Suris are from the finest Suri bloodlines available.
These include animals bred from the Purrumbete & Pucara herds, Suricaya, Allianca, and Summerhill.
The Surilox Alpaca are already being recognised as among the best Suris Australia has to offer.
In 2005 Surilox Zpaulina won a second place ribbon at the Australian Alpaca Association National Show in Bendigo and went on, in 2006 to win her first Supreme Fleece ribbon at Wool Expo in May.
Surilox Suris win consistently in the show ring & this reflects our outstanding conformation and superb fleece.
